The campaign for a full sized oval for Aireys Inlet has made some progress, with the Surf Coast Shire earmarking $20,000 in its draft budget for a feasibility study.

Residents have been lobbying for decades to have an oval built in the town, and a petition with 557 signatures was officially noted at the councils meeting in Aireys Inlet two weeks ago.

Once the budget is approved, officers will prepare a brief for the site suitability study and report back to council.

Some long time locals like Jan Venables were originally campaigning for an oval for her children some twenty years ago.  Now she is continuing to take up the cause, but now it’s for her grandchildren!

So winter has finally arrived.  Last week we were surfing Fairhaven in summer wetsuits as the coast was warmed by mild light offshore breezes.

This week however, reality has struck.  Cold, bitter winds and lots of rain.  Perhaps not enough to replenish the low water tanks and dry garden beds but it’s a start.

The fires are on nightly and the local fire wood suppliers are rushed off their feet again.  Some shops and restaurants are closing for their respective winter breaks.

We of course, are still open seven days a week offering sales services, permanent rental services and holiday rental services.

8 Kerrie Court was auctioned last November and was sold for $770,000.  For a host of reasons the vendor was unable to settle.

On Saturday it was the turn of Great Ocean Road Real Estate to auction the property, this time for the mortgagee.  It sold under the hammer for $850,000.  This is a 10% increase in only six months!

What makes the increase even more interesting was that the property was not furnished and was stripped of much of the kitchen and bathroom fittings.

It was also a great example of the auction system at work.  Well marketed and well priced.  This was combined with the skills of our Auctioneer, Managing Director Ian Stewart.

The successful purchaser confided that he went to the auction with a limit of $800,000!

Auctions do work.  And whilst he may have paid more

he planned, the look on his daughters face late that day when she went through the property for the first time, was priceless.

LOOK AFTER OUR ROAD!

The federal government has been urged to take more financial responsibility for the maintenance of the Great Ocean Road.

G21 Geelong Region Alliance says the road generates billions of dollars for the economy, and is campaigning for $50 million over five years to bring the popular tourist road up to standard.

‘The federal government is falling short of its responsibilities to the Great Ocean Road and surrounding communities’ G21

chief executive officer Elaine Carbines said.

Ms Carbines said the road should be included in the National Land Transport Network.

Geelong Otway Tourism Executive Director Roger Grant said the road brought $2.1 billion to the economy annually.

One might expect things to go quiet in our magical part of the world during the colder, quieter months, but this is not so.

The Easter long Weekend is one of the busiest

weekends on the coast all year and will see huge numbers of people enjoying the break in our fantastic region.

The Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach has been an annual event since the early 1960’s and will see the world’s best surfers this weekend, battling it out for the coveted trophy. The early forecast is for a strong swell to arrive Sunday afternoon/Monday.

For those of us who surf and live here, Easter is one of the worst times to go for a surf as there are surfers everywhere. This all changes in a week or so as the crowds will have gone, and the traditional Autumn/Winter swells should start to arrive.

Finally the weather has changed and we have seen some signs of a change in the seasons. Very warm weather last week and even a few nice days this week. You wouldn’t have thought the AFL season kicks off this week.

After good spring rain, our summer locally has been very dry. Geelong water storage levels, whilst much higher at the start of the year compared to 2012 have slipped to below the same stage as last year, albeit by only 1%.

It has been much drier on the coast. Aireys Inlet/Fairhaven water storages are down 20% on the same time as last year and have only received 12.6mm in February to date, against an average of 43.7mm.

Let’s hope there are some solid rains

around the corner.
