Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

Welcome to Aireys Inlet

The Surf Coast Shire is hoping to appease community concerns about a safety fence in Aireys Inlet by redesigning it to have less visual impact.

Work was scheduled to start this week on a modified fence along the new pathway between Aireys Inlet and Fairhaven.  The original fence, featuring 69 wooden posts linked by rope, was knocked down by unknown vandals in early September.

The council says fencing some sections of the path is a safety requirement under the AustRoads Guide to Road Design because of the gradient of the land on the side of the path.

VicRoads acting regional director Michael McCarthy said consultation has been undertaken with the council regarding safety standards for the replacement fence.

“VicRoads wants to make sure the fence provided meets current standards because the safety of pedestrians and cyclists is the priority”.
