Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

Welcome to Aireys Inlet

Alcoa has decided to shut down the Anglesea coal mine and power plant, after 46 years of operation.

The decision sees up to 85 people losing their jobs and follows the closure of the Alcoa Point Henry aluminium smelter last year, which the Anglesea plant had supplied electricity to.

Alcoa will be responsible for the rehabilitation of the area which backs onto the Great Otway National Park and sits among the environmentally important Anglesea Heath.  Managing fire risk will also continue to be the responsibility of the company.

Meanwhile, cold winds, rain and a big swell have pounded the coast this week.  Wood heaters and open fires were in strong demand this week as winter came early, however the weekend forecast is looking good at this stage.
