Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

Welcome to Aireys Inlet

In the same week it was announced that Melbourne’s house prices experienced the highest rate of growth among the nation’s capital cities during the September quarter with values rising 5%, the Reserve Bank also decided to leave the official cash rate at the record low of 1.5%, as was widely anticipated.

It was a big week last week in football with the Brownlow Medal and the Grand Final.  Congratulations to the Western Bulldogs on a fantastic win.

I mentioned last week how proud Moggs Creek was to have a Brownlow medallist among its residents.  Well Moggs Creek also has a premiership link as well.  Bulldogs player Luke Dalhaus has an aunty living in Moggs Creek and she is also an aunty of Patrick Dangerfield!  In fact Luke’s brother plays for Anglesea in the Bellarine Football League.

The Great Ocean Road is still closed between Wye River and Separation Creek due to the landslides and fallen trees.  This region cannot take a trick.  Bushfires over Christmas and now landslides caused by heavy rains!

What did Dorothea Mackellar write in her famous poem, My Country, first published in 1908?

‘I love a sunburnt country,

A land of sweeping plains,

Of ragged mountain ranges,

Of droughts and flooding rains’

Unfortunately Wye River knows this only too well.
