Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

Welcome to Aireys Inlet

Unless you have had your head buried in the sand this week, you have no doubt heard about the shark ‘incident’ on Tuesday at Cathedral Rock.

This is one of the more popular point breaks for surfing in the area and is regularly frequented by a number of Great Ocean Road Real Estate team members.

The person at the centre of the ‘attack’ is well known to all of us and was both very lucky and very unlucky at the same time.

Despite the relative hysteria around the incident, shark attacks have only claimed 13 recorded fatalities in Victoria since the first was recorded in 1849.  For comparison, Jaws munched through 21 people in just over two hours!

The last shark-related death in Victoria was in Portsea in 1956.

So whilst I am not saying to stay out of the water, perhaps leave Cathedral Rock to the locals for a few weeks …
