Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

What a shame, but what a champion.

Mighty Mick Fanning may have lost the final at the Rip Curl Pro yesterday at Bells Beach, but he lost no friends in the process.

Surfing doesn’t get the coverage of other mainstream sports in this country which is a little surprising given Australia’s dominance of the sport in the past, but Mick Fanning should go down as one of Australia’s great sportsmen.

This event was his farewell event and unlike so many sportsmen who go out when their star has well and truly faded, Mick was still at the top of his game and made the final at the age of 36. This is a man who has tragically lost two brothers along the journey and also stared his own mortality in the face when he fought off a shark in South Africa on live TV three years ago.

What’s more after missing the fairy-tale finish yesterday he paid rich tribute to the young Brazilian who beat him in the final. However it is not just his work on a surfboard that deserves attention. Mick has also been made an officer of the Order Of Australia medal for his work out of the surf.

Three world titles and all class. Cheers Mick.
