Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

For many, today will signal the commencement of the Melbourne Cup long weekend.  Even businesses that are open on Tuesday (like ours ☹), do their best to tune in at 3.00pm to the ‘race that stops a nation’ from Flemington Racecourse.

Personally, I’m not much of a punter but for those of you who are, I have compiled a list of interesting and not so interesting facts to help you in your tipping.

·         Geldings have won 14 of the 34 races since 1983, the most recent being in 2016.  Entires have saluted 12 times in that period.

·         Barrier 10 is the most successful in recent times, providing 3 winners since 2006.

·         15 of the past 30 winners had won their final lead up run, while another 6 were placed.

·         The fastest time was set by Kingston Rule in 1990 of 3 minutes, 16.3 seconds.

·         The shortest odds record was set by the mighty Pharlap in 1930 starting at 8/11 ($1.73).

·         The highest weight carried to victory was 65.5kg by Carbine in 1890.

·         The Pearl (1871), Wotan (1936) and Old Rowley (1940) have the record for the longest odds at 100/1.

·         The highest weight carried by a filly or a mare was 58kg when Makybe Diva recorded the third of her three successive Cup victories in 2005.

·         Makybe Diva is the only mare to win three Cups.

·         Connections of the first Cup winner (Archer in 1861) received 170 gold sovereigns and a hand-beaten gold watch, compared to the winners cheque of $3.6m these days along with an 18 ct solid gold Hardy Brother trophy valued at $175,000.

Whoever you back, good luck for the big race and look out for some new listings that have just hit the market.

Locally, the Aireys Fair is on this Saturday between 9am and 3pm.  Vibrant, energetic, eclectic and iconic, this great school fair offers yummy food, coffee and great activities and stalls to keep you entertained, engaged and just wanting more.  Come along for the fun of it.
