As I paddled in from an early surf this morning, I grumbled and moaned to another fellow about the number of people in the water. Every year it seems there are more.
As I drove to work following my surf I was listening to a report on the radio about the number of drowning deaths this holiday period around the country. In Victoria alone, there have been six drownings in just nine days. In December a total of 42 people drowned in Australian waters! If it were a specific illegal drug causing these deaths there would be an uproar, or perhaps even a royal commission.
In this state we require a licence to shoot, to fish, to drive, the list goes on. What about we bring in a licence to enter the ocean? I know, I know, it will never take off, but there should certainly be more education around water safety in general.
On a brighter note, Happy New year from all of us here. I hope that 2019 is a good one for you, and take care in the water over summer.
