Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

The Bells Beach surfing event is well underway although the much hyped ’50 year swell event’ hasn’t yet transpired.

There is a strong swell running at the moment, but nothing quite like what was forecast.  Perhaps a little Fake News being created by the contest organisers to try and generate more interest in the event?

There were a number of Anzac Day services along the Great Ocean Road on Thursday ranging from the large service at Torquay to the much less formal gathering at the Moggs Creek beach.  Complete with flags, radio, coffee and rum, a crowd of around forty gathered to listen to the service and to remember.

The day finished with a great game between Collingwood and Essendon won by the Pies in a thriller which once again is being remembered not for the fantastic spectacle and the final margin of 4 points, but for the Collingwood coach’s outrage at the fans booing of Scott Pendlebury.

I recall this has always been a part of our game and I think it was more a reaction by Essendon fans to some contentious umpiring decisions as opposed to anything personal about Scott Pendlebury.

Either way, for an independent observer, it was a cracker of a game and a great representation by both sides of the ANZAC spirit.
